Harry Potter’s Inspiration from Porto

Hi Wonderers,

I was perusing the Internet for free walking tours in Porto. I see available tours, but they were 1.5 hours or 3 hours long. Mind you, I am pregnant and already have trouble walking up hilly Porto. Also, I like history to a certain extent before I become bored.

As I continued to look, I see unavailable -and not free- walking tours for Harry Potter. Now that, I can listen for an hour or two. I go through articles to get the run down on the connection between Porto and HP. It turns out the author wrote part of her book in Porto and she also got some inspiration from buildings and shop.

I jotted down the inspirations. Some of the inspiration were far away and it wasn’t worth going in my opinion, especially since I only had a few precious days to spend in this beautiful city. I went where I could.

Take a look at some of the inspiration in the photos below. I love HP, but I won’t be able to tell you what scene X place inspired. I can just feel it’s magic.

Esgovaria de Belmonte

São Bento Station

Majestic Café

Fonte dos Leões

Torre dos Clérigos

Livraria Lello

The other two places were far for me. So I didn’t bother. Here is the remainder sites, if you have the time to go.

  • Jardins do Palácio de Cristal
  • Fernando Pessoa Statue

I had so much fun. There was a little more pep in my step up those hills. Porto has a lot of antique details and charm, so it is no wonder this place inspired so much in the magical world of Harry Potter.

I hope you make these pit stops.

Ciao,

Amy
